WBBL results 2021: Nat Fyfe photo sparks Ellyse Perry romance rumour

A photo of a spectator in the stands on the opening night of this summer’s WBBL season has sparked more rumours about a high-profile romance.

A photo of Nat Fyfe in the stands at Thursday night’s Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) game has sparked further rumours the AFL star is dating Ellyse Perry.

Perry captained the Sydney Sixers to a thrilling four-wicket win over the Melbourne Stars in a rain-affected season opener in Hobart, thanks to a sparkling 57 off just 27 balls from Alyssa Healy.

Fyfe’s appearance at Blundstone Arena comes after Perry was spotted in Fremantle’s changeroom following the Dockers’ convincing win over Hawthorn in July, which was also the 2019 Brownlow Medallist’s 200th AFL game.

Fyfe’s show of support at the cricket has fuelled speculation he and Perry are Australia’s new sporting power couple, though neither of them have said anything publicly yet about the nature of their relationship.

Ahead of the 2020 Brownlow Medal, Channel 7 asked Fyfe: “Other than your partner, who would you take to the Brownlow?”

The Fremantle captain replied: “Ellyse Perry, can I say that?”

Perry split from her ex-husband, Wallabies centre Matt Toomua, in July 2020 after nearly five years of marriage.

Earlier this year they offloaded their Sydney home in Chatswood for $2.7 million.

Toomua later started a new relationship with psychologist Naomi Cameron, the pair buying a house together in Melbourne.

Fyfe was treated to a show on Thursday. Heavy rain in Hobart delayed the start of play before the weather eventually relented, with both teams allowed to bat for 11 overs each in a shortened game.

The Stars got off to an absolute flyer thanks to veteran Elyse Villani’s power hitting until a sensational piece of fielding broke their opening partnership.

Annabel Sutherland slapped a short ball from Sixers captain Perry straight to 17-year-old Shafali Verma. The ball bounced up perfectly for the Indian star who, with only one stump to aim at, unleashed a rocket of a throw that hit the stumps and sent Sutherland on her way back to the pavilion.

The Stars scored 99 off their 11 overs, largely thanks to Villani’s knock of 54 not out as she carried on her stellar form from the last couple of tournaments.

Chasing 100 to win, Verma joined Aussie superstar Healy at the top of the order for the Sixers. But the Indian couldn’t repeat her heroics with the bat, getting clean bowled for eight by Sutherland, who exacted revenge.

Healy was in superb touch for the Sixers, smacking a half century to make the run chase manageable for the team in magenta, which reached the required target with four balls to spare to get its WBBL campaign off to the perfect start.

Healy cracked 11 fours in her rapid-fire knock to help the Sixers get their season underway on a winning note.
